Why I Created the Tera App

Learn the story behind Tera and how it can help you avoid toxic chemicals in your food, personal care, skincare, makeup, and household cleaning products.

How Tera Started

After selling my last software startup, I was determined to build a mission-driven company that would make a positive impact on people’s lives and our planet. Intrigued by the changing climate, I delved into the topic and found myself exploring the broader issue of how our modern lifestyles are wreaking havoc on the environment. From plastic pollution to toxic chemicals and deforestation, our actions are altering ecosystems and threatening countless species.

Initially, I envisioned creating a curated marketplace for eco-friendly products, vetting brands based on their commitment to preserving the environment. But as I delved deeper, I realized that the impact of a product extends beyond its packaging or manufacturing processes. It lies in the very ingredients used to make it. I entered the world of toxic chemicals and was shocked and angry by what I discovered.

Toxic chemicals are any substance that is harmful to human health “if inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin.” They can also be harmful to aquatic life and the ozone layer.

These substances are invisible to the naked eye and with esoteric scientific names are not only disrupting the most important hormones of our body and brain but also laying down multiple paths of disease that will impact our children and their children decades into the future. These chemicals are produced and distributed on a massive scale and are minimally regulated.

Toxic chemicals are ubiquitous in everyday products we use, from our clothing and personal care items to household cleaners and even our food and water.

These chemicals were introduced into the market with no human testing, and it was only after years of independent research that their detrimental effects on our health and the environment came to light.

They are linked to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, hormone disruption, fertility issues, child developmental issues, hormone disruption, asthma, ADHD, neurological issues, organ damage, skin irritation, aquatic life destruction, ozone layer damage, and more.

This newfound knowledge left me wondering why this information had remained hidden from me for so long. Why I had consumed for so long consumer products that were making me sick, making my children sick. I questioned why businesses prioritized profits over our well-being and why governments failed to protect us.

My anger fueled my determination to take action. I became obsessed with solving that problem and protecting consumers and our planet from toxic chemicals.

I decided to tackle first the consumer products we consume every day: food, personal care, skincare, makeup, and household cleaning products. I realized that the tool I envisioned had to be simple and accessible, empowering consumers to make informed choices while shopping online and in brick-and-mortar stores, at the large retailers they like to shop at. It had to go beyond simply scanning products on a store shelf. Thus, I set out to create an app that would curate healthy products at the ingredient level, providing visibility into the invisible world of toxic chemicals. It would enable users to search for and find healthier alternatives, personalizing their shopping experience based on their health requirements and environmental values.

Through this app, named Tera, I aimed to reclaim consumer sovereignty. By leveraging the growing number of entrepreneurs and brands committed to producing healthier alternatives, we could challenge the large consumer products brands that had prioritized profit over our health for far too long. Tera would serve as a catalyst for change, driving businesses to adapt and create healthier products.

However, I recognized that this conversation was long overdue. People are drawn to convenience and affordability, and changing deeply ingrained habits is no small feat. But we must confront the reality that these modern conveniences come at a cost to our health and the planet.

To succeed, we needed to cultivate a community around this topic. We could no longer rely on governments to protect us; it was our collective responsibility to drive change. By using Tera at scale and empowering consumers to demand healthier options, we could push businesses to prioritize our well-being and the well-being of the planet.

Ultimately, my goal is to create a tool that would make it unnecessary for individuals to go down the rabbit hole of research to understand the impacts of toxic chemicals. It should not be the consumer’s burden to decipher complex ingredient lists and assess risks. We deserved to be protected, and it was time to shift the paradigm.

Together, let’s build a community dedicated to informed choices, healthier products, and a sustainable future. The journey starts with each of us, advocating for change and taking control of our consumer decisions. With Tera, we can redefine the norms and create a world where health and the environment are not compromised for the sake of profit.

What’s the Problem?

Many of the consumer products sold in the United States contain toxic chemicals, presenting a significant concern for public health. The presence of these chemicals can be attributed to a combination of factors, including a lack of testing and regulation, limited consumer knowledge, protection of trade secrets by the government, strategic marketing and public relations tactics, and a focus on cost efficiency and product effectiveness.

Unfortunately, as a result of these factors, many Americans are unknowingly exposed to toxic chemicals on a regular basis, which have been scientifically linked to a range of health issues such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, birth defects, infertility, and hormone imbalances.

The extent of our exposure to toxic chemicals is alarming. Studies have found that the average person is exposed to over 100 chemicals every day, and even unborn babies are not spared. Research has shown that infants are born with more than 280 industrial chemicals and pollutants in their umbilical cord blood, inherited from their mothers. Of these chemicals, 180 are known to cause cancer, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 are associated with birth defects or abnormal development.

The implications of these toxic chemicals extend beyond human health and also contribute to environmental issues. Out of the 84,000 chemicals currently in circulation, only a mere 1% have been thoroughly tested for safety. Manufacturers are not required to disclose all the ingredients used in their products, partly due to the fragrance loophole, further complicating the situation.

It is important to recognize that the presence of toxic chemicals in consumer products is a major contributing factor to the rise of common health issues seen today. The long-term consequences of widespread exposure to these chemicals, both on human health and the environment, are still not fully understood. The urgency to address this issue is clear, as it affects the well-being of individuals and the sustainability of our planet.

By raising awareness, demanding transparency, and supporting initiatives like Tera, we can drive positive change. Together, we have the power to challenge the status quo, advocate for stricter regulations, and promote healthier alternatives. It is time to prioritize the health and well-being of consumers, ensuring that products on the market are safe, free from harmful chemicals, and environmentally sustainable.
