Understanding Tera’s Color Rating System: Shop Smart with Confidence

Today we are going to talk about the Tera color rating system. Red means bad, yellow means it’s probably bad, exercise caution.  And green means good. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. Just kidding, there’s a bit more to it than that. Let’s get into it!

There are three different sections of the app where the green, yellow, red color system is used: preference match, ingredient safety, and nutritional value. When Tera filters a product based on your preselected preferences, it will highlight it in green if it matches and red if it does not. For example, if the Vegan Certified preference has been selected, Tera will highlight whether it is vegan certified or not.

Sometimes, the Ingredient Toxicity and Harmful to Waterways preferences ratings can be highlighted in Yellow. This is because the ingredients in the product are of less risk and do not warrant a Red rating. However, with repeated usage or long-term exposure, it could still be harmful.

When looking at the ingredients page, you will see each individual ingredient highlighted in red, yellow, green, and sometimes grey. Red means the product does not match your preferences and is hazardous to yourself and/or the environment. Yellow means the ingredient is potentially hazardous, and green means it is perfectly safe. Ingredients highlighted in grey are those for which we currently do not have enough information to analyze. Tera is a small startup that analyzes THOUSANDS of ingredients, and we are committed to continually improving the app and exposing these harmful chemicals.

Lastly, nutrition is essential to our health and development; however, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025, most Americans do not meet the recommended dietary guidelines for several key nutrients, such as fiberpotassium, and vitamin D.

Tera analyzes the ingredients in food products just like any other product and rates the nutritional value of each nutrient best suited for the average, healthy adult. We rate these nutrients based on guidelines outlined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Food and Nutrition Board.
