Plastic Oceans

Plastic Oceans International is a nonprofit organization raising awareness about plastic pollution to inspire behavioral change. Our origins date back several years, as part of the team that helped distribute the award-winning film A Plastic Ocean, but our current status has been as a fully independent nonprofit organization since 2016. More than 300 million tons of plastic are produced annually, yet more than 90% of all plastic is not recycled. At least eight million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean each year—equal to a garbage truck per minute. Studies find plastic pollutes the air, water and entire food chain, threatening human health, wildlife and the planet. Through solutions-focused films and digital content, Plastic Oceans promotes a global movement to rethink plastic.

Education Programs
Engage students about plastic pollution and ocean conservation by screening films in the classroom, complemented by Plastic Oceans’ student-catered education and discussion guides, educational activities and lesson plans. Plastic Oceans also works with educators to create powerful learning experiences for students and teachers alike, and we’re always looking to help. For example, click HERE to access our Education & Discussion Guide for the award-winning documentary, A Plastic Ocean.

Rethink.Refill.
This education program empowers youth, prevents plastic pollution and delivers clean drinking water to underserved schools worldwide. Rethink.Refill. provides water refilling stations and reusable bottles to teach students about plastic waste as they participate in a solution that eliminates single-use plastic bottles from the waste stream.

#SwimAgainstPlastic
Swim Against Plastic is a global campaign to help end plastic pollution. It launched on Easter Island, Chile in March 2019 with the help of Plastic Oceans partner, Breathe Conservation. Drawing attention to the global plastic waste problem, South African endurance swimmer, Sarah Ferguson, set a new world record, becoming the first person to swim around Easter Island’s entire perimeter.

Swim Against Plastic continues to raise plastic pollution awareness and inspire the world to find solutions and rethink plastic use.
