How to Choose a Safer Sunscreen: Protect Yourself from Sun AND Chemicals

In 2019, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expressed concerns about 12 sunscreen ingredients, with oxybenzone being a particularly alarming one. Research has shown that oxybenzone can disrupt hormone balance, increase cancer risk, lead to shorter pregnancies, and even lower testosterone levels in adolescent boys. Shockingly, oxybenzone has been detected in amniotic fluid and breast milk, underscoring the need for caution.

While oxybenzone has been reduced in many sunscreens, it can still be found in popular brands as manufacturers struggle to achieve SPF levels above 50 without its inclusion. The good news is that the percentage of chemical sunscreens with oxybenzone has decreased from 60% in 2019 to 13% this year, thanks to growing consumer awareness.

But it’s not just oxybenzone. The FDA has also expressed concerns about other sunscreen ingredients, such as homosalate and avobenzone, known as endocrine disruptors. These ingredients have been linked to health issues ranging from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder to fertility problems. Furthermore, some sunscreens containing octocrylene have been found to break down into benzophenone, a possible carcinogen.

While the FDA has not yet approved newer, safer ingredients for sunscreens, European regulators have made progress in this regard. Mineral sunscreens, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, are effective alternatives that sit on the skin and block harmful rays. Tera can help you find mineral sunscreens that provide broad-spectrum protection without the risks associated with chemical sunscreens.
